Tenerife is situated in the geographic centre of the Canary Islands, with a surface of 2,034 sq km, and only 25 km from the island of La Gomera and 50km from Gran Canaria.

The island has a triangular form and is crowned by the Mount Teide volcano (3,718 m), which is also the highest mountain of Spain.

The island is of volcanic origin, but had its last activities almost 100 years ago, in 1,909, when the Chinyero volcano erupted, which today is a natural reserve

The volcanic complex of the Teide and the Old Pico arose about a million years ago, inside the previously formed cauldron (caldera) known as Gorges of  Teide. Different natural landscapes appear as the altitude rises. In fact, 43 per cent of the island is protected ground, containing various different ecosystems, like those of the Malpais in the lower areas of the south, with recent volcanic ground, scarce rainfall and an average temperature of over 20 degrees Celsius.  On the other hand, the subtropical forests of the Laurisilva are situated at an altitude of over 800 m, on the slopes of the northern part of the island. Their leafy vegetation, with different endemic species, gives the mountains of Teno and Anaga their own special character. The realm of the Canarian pine forest starts at an altitude of over a thousand metres. These are the largest trees in Spain and, due to the amount of resin accumulated in their interior, resistant to fire and rot, with a strong regenerative capacity.
